By reexamining today’s systems of mass production, mass consumption, and mass disposal, and reevaluating reuse from a lifecycle perspective, we work to build mechanisms that enable continuous, sustainable reuse. By quantifying the environmental impact of reuse and surveying actual reuse behavior, we aim to realize a society in which reuse is a daily habit.
Through quantitative evaluation of the environmental impact of reuse and surveys on actual reuse behavior in community-based settings, we seek to understand the current state of reuse from multiple perspectives. Based on these insights, we explore concrete ways to promote and support reuse behaviors.
We work on developing tools and processes that allow people to participate not merely as consumers, but as partners in building a culture of reuse. We also conduct research into methods for removing the psychological and physical barriers associated with letting go of possessions or purchasing and using secondhand items, as well as effective ways of presenting environmental information that can encourage reuse.
We develop environmentally and economically efficient systems for collection and delivery, and explore mechanisms to promote the spread of restored, repaired, and refurbished items. We also examine ways to optimize the lifespan of items through mechanisms such as insurance, and work on establishing quality standards for secondhand items.
