mercari R4D, an research and development organization aiming to implement the company’s findings into society, will host “Mercari R4D 5th Anniversary Session ‘Pioneering the Path’—The Potential of Technology Born From Co-Innovation,” to celebrate its 5th anniversary on December 22, 2022.

At this event, discussions centered on “co-innovation,” the idea of R&D organizations and methods that exceed the confines of defined organizations and affiliations to unite various communities will take place. Discussing across the position will be Dr. Yoichi Ochiai, Director of Strategic Platform for Digital Nature at the University of Tsukuba, and Dr. Atsuo Kishimoto, Director of the Research Center on Ethical, Legal and Social Issues, Osaka University.

Presenter Profile

Yoichi Ochiai

Director of Strategic Platform for Digital Nature, University of Tsukuba

Born in 1987. Completed the doctoral course at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, the University of Tokyo in 2015 (the first shortening of the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies), Ph.D. (Interdisciplinary Informatics). Afterwards, he founded Pixie Dust Technologies inc. and was involved in the development of phased array and digital fabrication technologies. He has been the assistant professor of information media at the University of Tsukuba since 2015 and explored the linkage between MI and human intelligence using wave engineering and digital fabrication technology. From 2015, he is a director at Mitou Foundation and XR Consortium. From 2017 to 2019, he is also an assistant professor at the University of Tsukuba, a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts, and a visiting professor at Digital Hollywood University from 2017. From 2017, he established Strategic Research Platform toward Digital Nature and became Director of Platform and Associate Professor of University of Tsukuba. In June 2020, he became the director of the Digital Nature Development Research Center.

Atsuo Kishimoto

Director of the Research Center on Ethical, Legal and Social Issues, Osaka University

He worked at the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, Ministry of International Trade and Industry after he received his PhD in economics from Kyoto University. After engaging as Head of research group, Research Institute of Science for Safety and Sustainability, National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), he was appointed as a specially-appointed professor, Graduate School of Public Policy, Tokyo University. Since 2017, he has been a professor at Osaka University Institute for Datability Science. From 2020, he is also a head of Osaka University Research Center on Ethical, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI Center). He is also a member of Ratiation Council, Nuclear Regulation Authority and visiting researcher, National Diet Library. In addition, he has been a member of the PTA of a local elementary school for 5 years and a chairman of the neighborhood association for 2 years.

Yoshihiro Kawahara

mercari R4D Head of Research / Head of Research Institute for an Inclusive Society through Engineering(RIISE), Tokyo University

Born in 1977. Ph.D. in Information & Communication Engineering, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo, in 2005. Ph.D. in Information Communication Engineering. After working as Research Assistant, Assistant Professor, Lecturer, and Associate Professor at Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, University of Tokyo, he was appointed Professor of School of Engineering in 2019. Research Director of JST Erato Kawahara Universal Information Network Project. Head of Research Institute for an Inclusive Society through Engineering(RIISE) since 2019. Also has a role as Advisory Board member at Mercari R4D since 2019.
