Mercari, Inc. (“Mercari”) is pleased to announce that a paper coauthored by Yuto Takei, a researcher in the company’s research and development organization Mercari R4D (“R4D”), and Kazuyuki Shudo, a professor in the Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies at Kyoto University, has been accepted for presentation at IEEE International Conference on Blockchain Technology (“IEEE Blockchain”).
IEEE Blockchain is an international conference held annually since 2018 where experts meets to discuss research and development regarding blockchain technologies and their application. This year’s conference1, the seventh of its kind, will take place from August 19 to 22 in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Yuto Takei is scheduled to present at the conference on August 21 at 9:30 PM JST (2:30 PM CEST).
Research Summary
Over the past year of offering a service for buying and selling cryptoassets2 3, Mercari subsidiary Mercoin, Inc. (“Mercoin”) has become no. 1 in the industry in terms of the number of new cryptoasset accounts opened in the past year4.
Mercari Group maintains systems to strictly protect cryptoassets held by users and in Mercari’s accounts to help realize a safe and secure environment for cryptoasset transactions.
The selected research paper focuses on the cryptoasset Ethereum. It examines a method of managing cryptoassets called staking as a further extension of research regarding the safe storage of cryptoassets5.
Effective Ethereum Staking in Cryptocurrency Exchanges
A technology referred to as blockchain is generally used to record cryptoasset transactions. In particular, Ethereum is equipped with a mechanism that increases revenue from handling fees while contributing to verifying the validity of cryptoasset transaction records through a process called staking. This research identifies technical issues that should be resolved by cryptoasset exchange businesses to implement staking and evaluates the stability and economic balance of systems acquired through testing.
The results of this research will do more than contribute to maintaining the stability of blockchain technology. They will conceivably contribute to building the new ecosystem that Mercoin is aiming to establish by returning to users the revenue generated from staking.

Future Outlook
R4D will continue its research into information security in the fintech domain, particularly in cutting-edge areas utilizing cryptoassets and blockchain technology, to further accelerate the realization of safe and secure transactions. These research topics include core technologies involved in the implementation of blockchain itself, as well as applications such as decentralized finance (DeFi). Mercari will continue to create future-facing innovation for Mercari Group’s services and businesses using R4D’s research results, aiming to deploy that innovation beyond the confines of our labs.
About Mercari R4D
